Inner Wheel District 1 News

Orange the World

What is Orange the World? It is a United Nations campaign to encourage people all over the world to wear the colour orange to take action and end violence towards women and girls (25th November to 10th December). Below is Jean, Doris and Gladys wearing the colour orange at Castleton Farm Shop (November 2024). Very easy to do but it starts a conversation. People asked us why we were wearing orange. Another way is by wearing orange knitted brooches. Here Aberdeen members wear orange and/or wear orange brooches at a recent coffee morning in September. Photos were then posted on social media so more people are aware. Soon we will produce posters for Unite against violence. One poster is below.

Heather Sheerin OBE

It is with a heavy heart that Heather Sheerin was laid to rest on 25th July 2025. Family and friends gathered in Inverness to hear stories of an amazing lady and one who has touched the lives of many people around the world. Heather’s major achievement this year was chairing and welcoming Inner Wheel members at the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB & I Conference in Harrogate (April 2025). Heather was Association President at one of her most difficult years. With the support of Heather’s husband James and family, Heather was able to overcome her illness and give everyone the time of their life. We shall miss Heather beyond words x

Photos and events in this website that Heather attended have been left unedited.

2025 District 1 Rally -Forfar

Around 100 members and guests arrived in Forfar to celebrate the annual Rally for District 1.  Meeting up with friends is the key to a successful Rally and the 2025 Rally was no exception.  District Chairman Jean Hale presided over the day’s proceedings, welcoming guests from around District 1 and Districts around GB&I. Invited guests were made very welcome on the top table and at tables throughout the function room. Association President Heather Sheerin was unable to attend but Julie Ramsay (District 2) the Association International Services Chairman attended and gave Heather’s address. The 2025 Rally was a really special event in Inner Wheel calendar. Here are a few photos to see what happens in a Rally.

Donations for Ukraine

Forfar President Susan Oliphant & Lesley Ducat  (above) delivered a huge amount of women’s sanitary items to TASH – ready for shipment to Ukraine – in their 100th lorry. The ladies also donated cash (collected in Smartie tubes) which will go towards transport costs. This is part of the Forfar Club’s commitment to this important international charity.

European Rally – Denmark

6 members from 3 of our clubs recently attended the 3rd European Rally in Aarhus, Denmark – (Back row from left) Jessie Stuart (Stirling); Jean Hale (Forfar); Trish Douglas (Montrose); Nanette Thomson (Stirling); Lesley Niven (Stirling) and Liz Gordon (Stirling).  A most enjoyable experience for all of us – renewing friendships and making new ones.  Some added a couple of days of sightseeing by open top bus & canal barge in Copenhagen prior to travel north to Aarhus by flexi-bus – all highly recommended.

The theme of the Rally was Diversity, Inclusion and Integrity and this theme was explored by speakers from the Danish Government as well as the UN.  Bo Kristiansen – the only white Masai elder – talked on his work with the Masai tribes in Kenya and Tanzania; we heard about a basket making enterprise in Mozambique which has been embraced by IW Denmark as a social & fundraising project – the baskets were lovely but too bulky to bring home; and of course a  workshop on Orange the World by the OtW team – our own Trish speaking from the heart about experiences of women & young girls in Bangladesh which she heard about in a facility run by Inner Wheel.

Of course,  these events are totally social get-togethers, and the Danish organisers had organised fabulous entertainment & meals for us to attend – the opening night’s meal in local restaurants around Aarhus; to the Gala Dinner;  and another night when we all wore our tartan scarves & corsages.  There was lots of music from choirs & solo performers as well as members joining in renditions of well- known songs at the beginning and end of every session – maybe an idea for our District meetings, ladies?

The 4th European Rally will be held in Basel, Switzerland in 2028.

District Assembly Dundee (Aug 2025)

Each year District 1 has an Assembly and this has taken place at the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee for the past 3 years.  For incoming Club officers the Assembly is a good opportunity to find out what is required of the Club Executive officer and meet District Officers. A lunch allows members to mix with members from around our District. Remember the District is a huge geographical area from Stirling in the south to Inverness in the North. 17 clubs in total. Here are a few photos from the 27th August 2025.

Our charity speaker at the District Assembly was Anne Bell from Maggie’s Centre Dundee. More information on Maggie’s is on District 1 page (see yellow bar below). International Inner Wheel Past President Trish Douglas gave a presentation on Orange the World that Interntional IW members will raise awareness during 25th November to 10th December. More information on poster at top of page. The District Executive team is photographed. President Jennifer Brown (Inverness) was presented with the Taylor Brown quaich to take back to members for all their hard work towards the charity Arthritis Action that the late Heather Sheerin supported last year. And also the Aberdeen Club members are photographed having a good day out, lunch and District meeting. So good to catch up with friends.
