Nairn

Fun & Friendship

Our Club

Nairn Inner Wheel was chartered in 1958 and have just celebrated our 65th anniversary.  We currently have 31 members.  We enjoy regular walks and outings as well as fundraising for local and international projects and form ad hoc craft groups for special projects – knitting squares to be made into blankets for Ethiopia.  Our club has a thriving book group which has been running for several years.  Currently we have twelve members and meet every six weeks. We have a Facebook page also –

Where do we meet?

Nairn Inner Wheel is part of Inner Wheel District 1, and we meet at the Golf View Hotel, Nairn IV12 4HD
Meetings are held at 7pm on the third Wednesday of the month.   No formal meetings are held in July & August but coffee mornings, fundraising and social events continue throughout the year.

Our Area

The Royal Burgh of Nairn is a small town and resort set in the Moray Firth about sixteen miles east of Inverness.  It is reputed to be one of the sunniest and driest places in Scotland and has the added benefit of no midges!  With excellent beaches and two championship golf courses, the town attracts holidaymakers and golfers, many from overseas.  During the summer months events such as the Book and Arts Festival, the Highland Games and the Farmers’ Show are popular with both local people and visitors.
Along with beautiful scenery, there are places of interest nearby such as Brodie and Cawdor Castles, the Culloden Battlefield and Fort George,  The Cairngorms National Park Is further away but is still easily accessible being within an hour’s drive from the town.

Sunrise at Nairn Beach – absolutely stunning!

Picture Competition – WINNER!

This magnigficent photo of a Highland Coo is this year’s winner of the Picture Competition.  A very worthy winner and so representative of District 1. Well done to Sheelagh Southwell – the picture is on the front cover of our latest Association magazine.  All entries can be viewed in a gallery/post at bottom of page.

Afternoon Tea

Winter Walks

Well, how brave are we? On Friday 3rd January eleven of our members met for a bracing walk along the front at Nairn and over part of the golf course. We then adjourned to Dorothy Pearson’s house for refreshments and lots of chat. Thank you Dorothy – this was greatly appreciated.

Book Group

Our book group is a popular part of Nairn Inner Wheel.  Currently we have fourteen members who attend regularly.  We meet every six weeks (to give us time to read other books between meetings) and have read a wide variety of books, which  provide us with plenty of topics for discussion.  Our meetings inevitably conclude with tea, cake and conversation – a social occasion enjoyed by everyone.

Orange the World

Nairn Inner Wheel Club held  an orange themed meeting in November. Members have been making numerous knitted flowers which have been purchased and sent far and wide! Along with other sales items they made £250 which is to be donated to RASASH – Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, Highland. Many congratulations Nairn members.

Modelling scarves

At a recent Club meeting, colourful scarves were on display to purchase as modelled by Dorothy Pearson and Kim Mackay. A really interesting idea for the Nairn Club.

Food Bank Collection

The club regularly collect food for their local food bank donating this on Inner Wheel Day.

Christmas Market

Club members enjoyed fund raising at the local Christmas Market.

Day Out to Plockton

A very happy memory – Members of our club and two guests had a most enjoyable day out at the beautiful village of Plockton where member Dorothy Pearson, owns a hotel.  Having had refreshments on arrival, we just had time to visit a little craft fair before an excellent lunch at the hotel.  A boat trip followed with wonderful views of seals nonchalantly lazing on rocks.  For some of us, a scenic walk in the hills above the village ended our trip for which we owe Dorothy a huge thank you. Here we are looking very cheerful – but somewhat dishevelled after our boat trip

67th Birthday Lunch

On Wednesday 21st May, the club celebrated its 67th birthday. Club President, Ellen Maxwell was delighted to welcome seventeen ladies from Inverness, together with our Nairn members, to our birthday lunch.  One of our members, Liz Foley had just celebrated her 90th birthday and was presented with a beautiful flower arrangement after which the meal was served. Our newest member, Dany was then invited to cut the cake.  Our speaker was Peter Roberts aided by his wife Trish who is one of our members and a very keen photographer. Their subject was their Botswana Adventures and Peter gave an excellent account of the highlights and perils of their experiences there, living in close proximity to a variety of wild animals. This was a most interesting talk which was much appreciated by everyone.

Other Projects

For many years our club at Nairn have been supporting the Shoe Box Appeal organised by Blythswood Care. These are the boxes (below) we have donated in October this year and arrived in Eastern Europe to bring hope and a little Christmas cheer to people in need.

Eradicating Fistula  –  We have just sent the six blankets (photo above) to Hamlin Fistula, a UK charity dedicated to the treatment and prevention of serious childbirth injuries in Ethiopia.

Another project involves knitting baby hats to give to every new mother in Raigmore Hospital.
