Our town – Ellon

Ellon is a modest country town 15 miles north east of Aberdeen. It was created a burgh of barony in the 13th century when it was the seat of the Earls of Buchan. Situated as it is in the heart of rural northern Aberdeenshire it has long been an agricultural centre with regular markets until relatively recently. With the oil boom of the latter part of the last century Ellon became a dormitory town but it never lost its sense of identity and community.  In 2014 the18th century gardens surrounding the ruined 14th century Ardgith castle, right in the centre of Ellon, were gifted to the town and a group of volunteers have created a tranquil oasis for locals and wildlife in this beautiful spot, featuring amongst other things a collection of ancient yew trees which are at least 500 years old.

100 for 100

Members are busy planting bulbs by the river in the February sunshine.

Members have also produced this amazing haul of knitted goods – many hundreds!!!!

Other Projects

In March some of our members walked a mile a day to raise funds for the Archie Foundation. Well done girls!

Summer Get-together

Members certainly did not allow rain to stop play or fun at their recent Club Day Out hosted by member Tina & her husband.  A game of petanque, prosecco, home made gin and a lovely lunch went on in spite of the inclement Scottish weather.  Great fun and laughter with £260 raised for the Shamma Children’s Home in Penang.

District Chairman Jean’s Visit – 21st October 2024

DC Jean visited the Ellon Club on Monday 21st October and received a very warm welcome from members . Jean was welcomed by October President Anne Hamilton and during the meeting was able to induct 2 new members – Kate Keay and Pat Warren (photo above). Also present were two further prospective members Morag Macpherson & Lyn Hewitt. The speaker at the meeting was Jonathan Cordiner co-founder of Kayleigh’s Wee Stars – a local charity which provides financial assistance to families who have a terminally ill child.

30th Birthday Meeting

Our 30th Birthday was celebrated in style on the 4th February with a visit to Meldrum House for afternoon tea with some guests from District and neighbouring clubs, as well as some of our Past Presidents who are no longer members. The food was excellent, the staff very attentive and if the noise level was anything to go by everyone had a great time.

District Vice Chairman Annetta Anderson & Past District Chairman Marjorie Duncan cut the cake
