Inverness

Fun & Friendship

Where do we meet?

Inverness  Inner Wheel is part of Inner Wheel District 1, and we meet at Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness IV2 4LF.  Meetings are held at 12.30pm for 1pm  on the first Thursday of the month.   No formal meetings are held in July & August but coffee mornings, fundraising and social events continue throughout the year.

Our Club

Inverness is the largest club in our District.  We were chartered in 1959. We currently have 52 members.  As well as the monthly meetings members enjoy coffee mornings knitting and all types of crafts, regular walks and outings as well as fundraising for local and international projects.

Our City - Inverness

Inverness is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.K. it scores highly in terms of quality of life for residents. Located in the centre of the Scottish Highlands beautiful scenery surrounds us and the city itself is picturesquely situated on the banks of the River Ness. We have many tourist attractions in the area , the most popular being Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness where visitors always hope to catch a glimpse of the elusive Nessie.

ORANGE THE WORLD

The Inner Wheel Club of Inverness took part in an awareness walk from the Eden Court Theatre, wearing orange. They crossed the main bridge which was lit up in orange to mark the Orange the World campaign. The walk finished at Inverness Town House. Ahead of the walk members of Inverness Club hosted an information stall in the Victorian Market on 22 November sharing information about the campaign to help public awareness of the scale of violence faced by women and girls worldwide.

Joint Project with Inverness Rotary Clubs

Our Club has been involved in a joint venture with the 4 Inverness Rotary Clubs in supplying items for war torn Ukraine.  After an initial appeal for  toiletries we have gone on to supply bedding, baby items and medicines like asprin and paracetamol.

Our most recent collection saw members packing a van at Morris Lesley's yard in Errol full of vital aid that will make its way to Eastern Ukraine. Boxes were carefully labelled and will arrive in Western Ukraine in 4 days. The boxes are then collected by a Ukrainian charity team and transported to Eastern Ukraine - all organised by H4U's representative Lena Maksimova. So the link in the chain that starts out in Inverness with help from all four Rotary Clubs and Inner Wheel is such an important aspect of the support that is needed in Ukraine. For more on the story see Facebook page for Rotary Club of Inverness and Culloden

February Meetings

In February the club held a joint Burns Lunch with Inverness Rotary and at their own club meeting had a speaker from Mary's Meals.  Mhairi's excellent marmalade was also on sale

Jeeps for Peace

Our speaker in March was  Simon Cole Hamilton, a member of Inverness Rotary, on his many journeys to Ukraine with Jeeps for Peace

Quiz Night for RNLI

A very successful Quiz Night was held at the end of November.  This was a joint event with the Rotary Club of Inverness.  Over 100 were in attendance in spite of adverse weather predictions.  After the quiz a supper was served and a raffle was drawn.  Sadly District Chairman Jean & her husband Tim were unable to make the trip – following Police & Traffic Scotland ‘s advice for travel during Storm Bert!  Club Secretary Sheila Moir made these lovely wooden spoons as prizes – in the shape of Lifeboat crewmen! Way to go girls!!!  WELL DONE Inverness!

New Members for Inverness

At our May meeting President Jennifer inducted 4 new members to our club and they have been made very welcome by everyone.
(L to R) Phemie Cameron, Val Cantlay, Lily Baillie and Jennifer Sheerin (daughter of our greatly missed friend Heather, Immediate Past Association President)
We then had a very interesting talk by Helen Macrae about the charity Highlands for Ukraine which sends aid to Ukraine and is supported by our club and Rotary in Inverness She also gave us an update on the current situation.

Christmas meal and raffle

Inverness IW had a splendid Christmas lunch at the Kingsmills Hotel on Thursday for over 80 members and friends. People were very generous in buying gifts from a wonderful craft stall, raffles, jigsaw and holly wreaths raising £1500 +.  We were beautifully entertained by members of Inverness Choral singing carols.  Thank you everyone for a great afternoon.

International Speaker

This photo is of Muzhda – one of the medical students whom the Linda Norgrove Foundation brought over to study medicine in Scotland. Muzhda lit our friendship candle at our November meeting and talked about life in Afghanistan under the Taliban which is absolutely awful for women. We have waited for permission to show this - obviously, her situation is a bit sensitive!

District Chairman Nanette's visit

District Chairman Nanette visited Inverness Club on 3rd September 2026, her first visit since becoming DC. President Evelyn Miller and members gave Nanette a warm welcome and enjoyed very much her entertaining and enthusiastic address.

Blankets for Hamlin Fistula

Members continue to knit blankets for the Hamlin Fistula hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. For further information https://hamlinfistulauk.org/about-us/about-hamlin-fistula-uk/

The latest knitting for Hamlin Fistula for October 2026 delivery (above) comprises 4 knitted blankets, 2 quilts, 3 large teddies, 4 small teddies, 5 hats, 3 pairs bootees and 7 small jackets. All thanks to members who are committed to supporting this very worthwhile Women's charity.

The photo below shows the tremendous knitting over the past year or more. One member Riona has knitted two blankets and sewed the squares up. This is an incredible undertaking and these blankets were transported early in the year for the women at the hospital in the link above.

Heather Sheerin OBE

It is with a heavy heart that Heather Sheerin was laid to rest on 25th July 2025. Family and friends gathered in Inverness to hear stories of an amazing lady and one who has touched the lives of many people around the world. Heather’s major achievement this year was chairing and welcoming Inner Wheel members at the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB & I Conference in Harrogate (April 2025) - see gallery below. Heather was Association President at one of her most difficult years. With the support of Heather’s husband James and family, Heather was able to overcome her illness and give everyone the time of their life. We shall miss Heather beyond words x

Photos and events in this website that Heather attended have been left unedited.

65th Birthday

On the occasion of their 65th Birthday the club got great publicity for their work with an excellent write up and pictures in the Inverness Courier.  As well as this picture of the whole club attending their Birthday Meeting - the work of Heather, Mairi & Margaret were featured for thier contributions to 100 for 100!  Way to go ladies - certainly SHINING A LIGHT!

Outing to Crazy Golf

Six of us went to the Crazy Golf in Inverness and had the best time ever! None of us were any good, but Moira Seton was the least bad by a long shot. She was officially presented with the trophy by President Jennifer. We finished up with coffee and cake in the surprisingly mild weather after Storm  Amy.

Speaker from Mary's Meals

Our speaker in May was Peter Harkins from Mary’s Meals. We were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque to help with the work of the charity.  Pic shows ISO  Jennifer Brown handing over a cheque.

Highland Hospitality

Club members enjoyed showing 2 Inner Wheel ladies from Denmark the sights and some excellent Highland hospitlity for a few days prior to the International Convention in Manchester
